BASIC LABORATORY INFORMATION SYSTEMS (BLIS)

BLIS is an open source Laboratory Information System that provides a robust, customizable and easy-to-use system that tracks laboratory specimens, results, workflow, reports and consumables by using computer hardware and software. It addresses specific needs of the laboratory. GHSS IT Engineers install and maintain the BLIS software in Laboratories in Cameroon and the DRC. The software was introduced in 2012 with over 196 lab technicians, medical doctors, nurses etc. trained on it. It has been installed in over 14 labs in Cameroon. The software has been very instrumental in reducing patients’ turnaround time, providing vital statistics and curbing different form of malpractices within laboratories in Cameroon.

EQUIPMENT MAINTEN ANCEAND CALIBRATION (EMC)

The EMC programme of GHSS seeks to ensure high performance, efficiency and longevity of equipment in clinical and medical research laboratories so that the quality of results are constantly guaranteed. Over 18 biomedical engineers from 5 African countries, 45 biomedical in Cameroon have been trained on EMC. Equipment maintenance curriculum has also been developed for Technical Schools in Cameroon. We have surveyed 24 biosafety cabinets in Cameroon, and maintained / certified 18. A pipette calibration unit has equally been set up, and is calibrating all pipettes of laboratories enrolled on the SLIPTA process.

STRENGTHENING LABORATORY MANAGEMENTTOWARDS ACCREDITATION (SLMTA)

The SLMTA programme seeks to develop capacity and strengthen laboratory services, networks and systems in Cameroon and beyond. SLMTA is being implemented in over 32 laboratories. Five laboratories in the SLMTA Programme including the Medical Analysis Laboratory of Centre Pasteur Cameroon in Yaoundé have been accredited to ISO 15189 standards. Over nine other laboratories have undergone African Society For Laboratory Medicine-Stepwise Laboratory Quality Improvement. Over 357 lab staff have also been trained on SLMTA.

QUALITY ASSURANCE (QA)

We are working with the Ministry of Public Health to build the capacity of laboratory personnel on Lab QA and QA of HIV Rapid Testing (RT). Over 1,200 labs have been enrolled in the QA programme with over 3345 health personnel trained. The training has been extended to include non-laboratory personnel involved in HIV RT. On-site trainings are also carried out to support Continuous Quality Improvement in the diagnosis, linkage, treatment and management of patients. An effective sample referral system has been put in place for a safe and timely transportation of samples from reference labs to the peripheral labs and results from reference labs to peripheral labs.

EXTERNAL QUALITY ASSESSMENT (EQA)

We work in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Health and other partners to provide EQA materials to participating laboratories. Over 1,200 labs are enrolled and are participating in our HIV Proficiency Testing (PT)programme; 133 in Cluster of Differentiation (CD4), and 14 labs in Early Infant Diagnosis Point of Care Testing (EID POCT).
